Director’s Insight: The Changing Face of Rural Crime in Norfolk and East Anglia
A message from Robert Hardingham, Director at Day Secure
Over the years, I have seen first hand how rural crime in Norfolk and across East Anglia has evolved. It is no longer just opportunists targeting barns or isolated farm buildings. Today, organised criminal groups are using increasingly sophisticated technology to target rural properties, construction sites and agricultural businesses.
These groups are often well organised and highly prepared. They are now using tools such as RFID blockers, drones, thermal imaging devices and GPS jammers to bypass traditional alarms, scout properties and steal high value machinery or equipment with alarming efficiency.
What is particularly concerning is that many of these thefts happen quickly and with very little trace left behind.
Why Traditional Security Is No Longer Enough
Too often, traditional security systems simply record the incident rather than prevent it.
Fixed CCTV systems, for example, can capture useful footage after a crime has taken place, but they do not always act as a strong deterrent. By the time a theft has been recorded, the damage has already been done.
Rural sites are particularly attractive targets for organised criminals. They are often located in remote areas where response times may be slower, and they frequently contain valuable assets such as agricultural machinery, construction equipment, fuel stores and vehicles.
Criminal groups are also known to observe sites over time, studying routines and identifying weak points before returning to exploit them.
Responding To Modern Security Threats
As these threats have evolved, security solutions also need to adapt.
At DaySecure, this was one of the driving factors behind the development of our Sentinel motion detection units.
Sentinel units are designed specifically for sites where traditional security solutions may not be practical or effective. They provide 360 degree coverage, anti tamper protection, solar powered operation and instant photo alerts that are sent directly to the client’s phone when motion is detected.
This allows site managers, property owners and security teams to respond quickly to suspicious activity before a crime can take place.
The Advantage Of Mobility
One of the most important features of the Sentinel system, in my view, is its mobility.
Unlike fixed security installations, Sentinel units can be moved and repositioned as risks change. Construction sites evolve, equipment locations change and new vulnerabilities can appear over time. Being able to quickly adapt security coverage allows us to stay one step ahead of potential threats.
This flexibility is particularly valuable for construction sites, farms, vacant properties and remote locations, where permanent infrastructure may not be available.
Protecting Sites Across East Anglia
Sentinel units are already helping to protect vulnerable sites across the region and have successfully prevented multiple theft attempts.
By combining modern detection technology with rapid alerts and visible deterrence, they provide a much more proactive approach to site security.
As rural crime continues to become more sophisticated, our approach to security must evolve as well.
